What can PICkit 3 do?

Program PIC microcontrollers

Upload .hex firmware into a PIC.

Used with many PIC16, PIC18, PIC24, dsPIC and some PIC32 devices.

Debug your code

Set breakpoints.

Step through instructions.

Inspect registers and variables.

Watch how your firmware behaves in real time.

ICSP programming

PICkit 3 normally connects to the target MCU through ICSP (In-Circuit Serial Programming).

Typical connections are:

PICkit 3 Target PIC

VPP/MCLR MCLR/VPP

VDD VDD

VSS GND

PGD ICSPDAT/PGD

PGC ICSPCLK/PGC

Power the target circuit

For some low-power projects, PICkit 3 can provide power to the target board, although it is not intended to power larger circuits.
